As manufacturers of the raw materials in critical applications that address pandemic relief and recovery, the chemical sector has been designated as critical infrastructure in many of the worlds’ largest economies. Dow continues to operate under guidelines issued by the World Health Organization and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as local laws and restrictions in specific countries around the world.
We are working tirelessly with customers, suppliers, volunteers and our own employees to help resolve the many challenges arising from this pandemic. Below are some of the key applications where our materials can help:

Operating Status
President Trump has invoked the Defense Production Act in response to the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. This act provides the President with broad powers to direct U.S. industries to prioritize the production of medical supplies and personal protective equipment. Like many other private sector companies, Dow is already working with governments and prioritizing our resources aimed at mitigating the impact and spread of COVID-19. To date, we have not been required by the government to re-deploy our assets or operational activities, therefore we continue to allocate volume in accordance with the terms of our contractual commitments.
The health and safety of all of Dow’s Supply Chain partners remains a priority, including those directly in operations. We understand that you may be implementing your own control measures to limit potential exposure to your personnel and would like to clarify Dow’s position on the following:
- During loading/unloading the truck driver has critical responsibilities related to safe operations, some of which require them to be outside their vehicle – meaning they cannot remain inside the truck.
- We are directing our carriers to follow the recommendations of the World Health Organization and the U.S. CDC relative to the use of face masks (CDC COVID-19 FAQ).
- We ask for your support in taking good care of truck drivers while on your site. Please ensure they are given access to basic human needs, such as sanitary facilities and drinking water. Together we need to protect the workers and companies who form the backbone of road transportation. Failure to protect drivers will result in reduced capability to deliver our products.
We have asked our logistics service providers to activate their crisis management plans and to take appropriate measures to protect their personnel, your employees and ours. Across the globe, truck drivers are screened prior to accessing Dow sites consistent with medical guidance and regulatory constraints. The bulk marine logistics industry connects Dow’s vast network of production facilities, third party terminals, customers, and suppliers. With vessels and barges sailing to all ports near and far, marine logistics service providers are on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis. Dow is working closely with logistics service providers and internal experts to develop policies that incorporate WHO/CDC guidance and insure the ship/shore interface is “low touch.” Please reference the linked documents describing policies enacted at Dow terminals to manage vessel and terminal interactions and policies to manage cargo surveyor and carrier interactions.
Growing supply chain pressures due to recovering markets may cause delays through early 2021.
During these unprecedented times, Dow has taken many steps to protect our essential workers, maintain a dependable flow of product and provide transparency to our customers.
As we evaluate the global economic landscape, we see good news in recovering markets and improving demand. But with that recovery comes significant strain on logistics networks, which we expect to be amplified by the heavy vacation season ahead.
While Dow is currently processing orders normally without disruption, we recognize that marine and road carriers around the world face unprecedented demand that may exceed their capacity starting in mid-November through early 2021.
Even though Dow is working closely with carriers and taking proactive measures to protect our supply chain and shipping orders as scheduled, shipments may encounter delays during this timeframe. We want to make sure our customers plan accordingly and consider the following:consider the following:
